What causes wrinkles, lines & folds?
Wrinkles, lines & folds are caused by a combination of repetitive facial movements, skin laxity, and a loss of collagen. Together these factors cause lines and folds to become more prominent. As we age, our bodies lose elastin and collagen (which keeps our skin hydrated, firm, and elastic). With repeated facial expressions over time, it becomes harder and harder for our skin to return back to its original “expressionless” state. As a result of aging skin, crow’s feet and frown lines develop, and the nasolabial folds become more prominent.
What are crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet, also known as laugh or smile lines, are the lines around the outer corner of the eye. These lines appear typically in our early 30s, (or earlier without an effective skin care regimen). These inevitable lines appear as we age.
What are frown lines?
Also known as the 11’s, frown lines are the creases between the brows. Often times these unwanted lines also appear above the brow and around the eyes.
What are nasolabial folds?
The nasolabial folds are deep wrinkles located between the corners of the mouth and the nose. As we lose volume in our face, these folds become more prominent and noticeable.
What’s the difference between wrinkles & fine lines?
Fine lines indicate the beginning of the skin’s aging process. They are shallow, small, and may be difficult to detect at first. Fine lines are often associated with repetitive facial movements, such as laughing, frowning, smiling, or squinting. Because they are still superficial, they respond to treatments much faster than deeper wrinkles do.
Wrinkles form when fine lines aren’t addressed. As a result, the fine lines deepen and progress into facial folds and wrinkles. Wrinkles also tend to form in different areas of the face and neck, whereas fine lines frequently form around the eyes and mouth.
